If you are a parent of a grumpy teen it may come as a shock to you to know that we quite like spending time with you..well..on holiday at least! So… which are the best cruise lines to sail on if you want to have a good time with your kids & teens? Well nowadays there are so many activities for parents and kids to do together that family cruising has really taken off.
Some of the big cruise lines like Disney, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess and Carnival are way ahead of others when it comes to catering for families. It’s not an easy job providing activities that will appeal to all ages.
Whilst mums and dads might enjoy water slides, dodgems or even the FlowRider. Then there’s the activities that we all love like the karaoke…my dad ….singing Tragedy by The Bee Gees on the MSC Splendida. I have never seen more confused faces in my life!
Then when a ship calls into a port there are even family friendly shore excursions such as a FlowRider surf simulator experience in Grand Turk (See more in my next blog all about the best shore excursions for kids). Probably the best known cruise line for family friendly cruising is of course Disney. With a 3D movie cinema, mini-golf, Ping-Pong or basketball on the Sports Deck, Funnel Vision, a jumbo LED screen on Deck 9 shows movies and sporting events outdoors by the Goofy pool. So there is no way you can be bored!
Carnival Cruise Line’s Dream-class ships are aimed at families with scavenger hunts, ice cream parties and karaoke (complete with a live band backup!…my dad would LOVE that.)
For those families that prefer to do more relaxing activities they have a youth spa program where children (ages 12 to 17) and their parents can enjoy body and beauty treatments together. Well…you know where to find me!
On their newest ship the Carnival Vista you will find Carnival’s WaterWorks water park, with racing slides, a fitness area, ropes course, Ping-Pong, football and mini-golf. dive-in movies at the pool and west end standard stage shows.
Royal Caribbean are famous for their family fun ships, in particular there are sports tournaments, pool games and active challenges including game shows and trivia contests, as well as onboard parties. The newer ships such as Quantum, Anthem, Harmony and Ovation of the Seas have ice rinks and rock climbing walls, inline skating, golf and surf simulators and a zip line. I am determined to get on one of these!
Norwegian Cruise Line has always had a relaxed Freestyle Cruising which appeals to all members of the family. During the day there are pizza-making lessons, deck parties, family charades rock climbing and rappelling walls, a climbing cage, bowling alley and even multi-story water slides!
Princess Cruise Line has started to offer more for teens and kids with activities include parent-child scavenger hunts, trivia contests and karaoke. (..look out dad again!) The “Movies Under the Stars” is an experience that comes with blankets, popcorn, cookies and milk. They have comedians, musicians and even illusionists! There is also basketball, volleyball, Ping-Pong, laser shooting and driving range on Royal Princess and Regal Princess and on the top deck pools there is an interactive sound and light show with dancing fountains that shoot water up to 33 feet into the air.
Needless to say that cruising is a great way for families to spend some quality time together without killing each other!
