If you’ve never been on a cruise before you may think that one-size-fits all. A cruise is a cruise…right? Well…not really, there are lots of different cruises from action-packed adventures to luxury liners and everything in between. So…here is my Super 7 guide to different styles of cruising.
1. Family Cruises
Now…I always suggest family cruises if you’ve got teens. This is purely because they are big ships, with lots of activities and facilities onboard. This means your teens are going to have fun, fun fun! My top 2 family cruise lines are definitely Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Family cruising is a treat for all ages..from young…to young-at-heart! There really is something for the whole family, from toddlers to us teenagers and to mum and dad and even Nan! Plus one note for parents…with food, accommodation and entertainment included..it’s great value too!
2. River Cruising
One of the biggest worries I have heard about it cruising, is being far from land. So…if this is a worry for you, then do a river cruise! On a river cruise you are NEVER far from land. River cruises are often described as ‘coach tours’ on water, but they are much more than that! Yes of course you are going to visit many, many places but you also get fantastic gourmet food and meet friends for life onboard. There are no rock climbing walls, surf simulators, ice skating rinks or big Broadway style shows. But there is good company and lots to see on excursions.
3. Adventure Cruises
If you’re an adventurous teenager and love exploring then an adventure cruise is for you! How do you fancy zip-lining over South American jungles, paddling a canoe down an African river or experiencing the Polar Regions? Then adventure and expeditionary cruising is for you! Adventure cruises are definitely more about the destination and experience than the onboard facilities. Usually they’re on smaller ships to be able to navigate narrow and shall waterways, which bigger ships can’t get to. But this is certainly not a bad thing! Smaller ships carry fewer passengers so you get to meet other passengers and get a more personal service.
4. Luxury Cruises
What can I say? If you’re going to cruise…why not do it in absolute comfort and style! A luxury cruise is the height of pampering and glamour. With gorgeous suites, private balconies and pool decks, butler services, award-winning cuisine, indulgent spa treatments, packed entertainment programs and incredible nightlife, what is not to like!
5. Theme Cruises
Theme cruises have become very popular in America for a while now. And I am happy to say, these themed cruises are just about to take off in Europe!So..if you love rock music, murder mysteries or even “Star Trek” you can spend a holiday with people just like you!
6. Senior Cruises
These days I’m finding more and more cruise ships are catering for older people, you’re your folks! Just because you may have reached a certain age, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a fantastic holiday. Cruises can be as relaxing as you like, so make sure you choose a dedicated seniors or adults-only cruise, or pick an open-aged cruise and just take part in activities that interest you.
7. Volunteer Cruising
If you read my post all about volunteer cruising, you will know what Fathom is all about. Fathom cruising is cruising with a purpose. Travel around the world, doing community work and knowing that you have made a difference to the world and you have made someone’s life a bit better.
